Have you heard of the term, “You are the creator of your life”? What does that really mean and how does it work? Basically, you have a desire to do something and you take action to create that experience.
When I was in middle school, my teacher gave us a week to memorize the three-minute Gettysburg Address and then recite in front of the class. When it came my turn to present, I failed miserably. My mind went blank, and I could only remember one or two lines. The salvation was that I was not alone, and our teacher did not grade the speech.
Her goal, it turned out, was to create a desire in us to learn more about history. It worked. I became interested in Gettysburg and wanted to visit this Civil War battlefield where Abraham Lincoln gave his famous address. But, would I ever get there?
I forgot about my desire from childhood until Anne and I drove past a road sign to Gettysburg this year. That jarred my memory. As we kept driving, I thought about it. We were on our way from Maryland to a conference in West Virginia. Where exactly was Gettysburg, Pennsylvania? Did I really want to see it on this trip?
We would need to rearrange our schedule to be there in a few days. Seeing the sign was a synchronicity, and now I needed to decide if I wanted to act on it.
We reviewed our options after discovering it was only two hours away. Anne she was willing to give up her plans so I could complete my childhood desire. She made calls and rearranged our schedule because we decided to take action and go.
We drove to the Gettysburg National Military Park to see where Abraham Lincoln stood and gave his speech, “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. …” I was now standing on that consecrated ground. This gave me chills.
We talked to a park ranger extensively who explained the details of the battle and Lincoln’s later speech. History came alive for me that day. My old teacher helped create this moment by stimulating the desire in me to learn more about these events.
Creating involves having a desire, being in the moment alert to synchronicities, reviewing your options and taking action. To summarize:
- Creating starts with a desire. It can be mild or strong. (My desire from childhood was to see Gettysburg.)
- When you are present in the moment, you can recognize an opportunity to fulfill that desire. This is being alert to synchronicities. (I saw the road sign to Gettysburg and realized I still had the desire to visit there.)
- Finally, you review your options and take action to fulfill your desire. (We researched getting there, changed our schedule, and went.)
What do you desire? Make a list – you can call it your “bucket list.” This lets your higher-self know you plan to pay attention to the synchronicities it brings you around your desires. Then you take action and enjoy the life you are creating for yourself.
You are the creator of your life. Have fun creating!
